War of the Five Kings

The War of the Five Kings is a civil war occurring in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in the wake of the death of King Robert I. The five kings taking part in the civil war are Robert’s heir apparent, Joffrey Baratheon, Robert’s younger brothers, Stannis and Renly Baratheon, the “King in the North” Robb Stark, and the “King of the Iron Islands” Balon Greyjoy.

The Seven Kingdoms

Dragonstone

Stannis Baratheon’s faction, based on the volcanic island of Dragonstone. He claims the Iron Throne with an iron fist and a convert’s zeal, backed by the fiery R’hllor faith and the priestess Melisandre.

Dorne

The hot, sandy peninsula of the south. Prince Doran Martell rules with patience, while the Dornish spearmen remain fierce and independent.

The Iron Islands

Harsh, salt-worn rocks ruled by King Balon Greyjoy. Ironborn reavers worship the Drowned God and strike from the sea.

The North

The largest, oldest kingdom, ruled by King Robb Stark from Winterfell. Hardy Northerners keep the Old Gods and hold the line against the cold.

The Reach

The garden of Westeros, rich in crops and chivalry. Lord Mace Tyrell commands the largest army and the most bountiful harvests.

The Stormlands

Storm-lashed coast and ancient forests, ruled by King Renly Baratheon from Storm’s End. A proud martial tradition and a young king’s charisma.

The Vale

Impenetrable mountain peaks and the Eyrie high above. Lady Lysa Arryn sits safe behind the Bloody Gate, while the Knights of the Vale remain fresh.

The Westerlands

Gold‑rich hills and the power of Casterly Rock. Lord Tywin Lannister commands vast wealth and an army that never forgets a debt.

The Riverlands

Fertile, war-torn heartland of Westeros. Lord Paramount Edmure Tully struggles to hold the rivers against every passing army.

Beyond the Seven Kingdoms

The Free Folk

The wildlings beyond the Wall — clans, raiders, and skinchangers who refuse the knee. Hardened by the frozen north, they fight with savage independence.

The Night’s Watch

The black brothers guarding the Wall. Sworn for life, they hold the realms of men against what lurks beyond — no king but the Lord Commander.

Essos

The Free Cities

Braavos

The Secret City. Home of the Iron Bank, and the Mysterious Faceless Men. Wealth and shadows rule here.

Lorath

The quiet and beautiful northern city of fishermen and whale hunters. Remote and mysterious, with ancient mazes on a misty isle.

Lys

The Pleasure City. Famed for its pillow houses, beautiful people, and deadly poisons. Lysene slavers trade in flesh and alchemy.

Myr

City of Lens and Lace. Master glassblowers, crossbowmen, and the finest mirrors in the world. Industry meets artistry.

Norvos

High city of the bearded priests, hidden deep in the Hills of Norvos. Bells, axes, and ancient rituals guard its secrets.

Pentos

Port of spice and magisters. A city of wealth, scheming, and sweet wine, where the prince dances to the magisters’ tune.

Qohor

City of Sorcerers, famed for its dark arts and flawless Valyrian steel reforge. Its Unsullied guard the Black Goat.

Tyrosh

Warring city of bright-coloured hair, sellswords, and slave markets. A fortress-isle controlling the Stepstones.

Volantis

Oldest of the Free Cities, ruled by triarchs and elephants. A slave-driven metropolis longing for Valyria’s lost glory.

Minor Factions

The Dothraki

A khalasar thundering across the Great Grass Sea. No cities, no armour — just horse, steel, and fury. Khal Pono’s screamers are feared across Essos.
